Sometimes where you put your TV isn't always the best location for all occasions. Sure, you've picked out the perfect place on the wall for that new TV, and it works well when you're sitting down right in front, but what happens when you host a party, or want to see the TV from somewhere else?
Recently Inspired Electronics, Inc. was asked to mount a new 46" LCD in a Chicago condo. A simple enough task, but if you know Chicago condos, you'll know that sometimes their shape is a bit narrow, but long. This residence had a wonderful living area that was open to the kitchen. The kitchen had a huge island which flowed into the living room/TV area. A great place to host a party.
The TV was to be mounted over a fireplace, which would be great if you were sitting across from it... but one look at this residence and we knew that wasn't how this was going to be watched 100% of the time. What if you wanted to catch up on the news while eating breakfast? What happens when you host a part and everyone is hanging around the kitchen? You know everyone always ends up in the kitchen anyway right?
The TV, had to have multiple personalities for multiple occasions... it had to be flexible.
Usually in this situation, we use what is called a swing-out or articulating mount. This allows the TV to be pulled away from the wall, and angled towards the viewer. This adds a bit of cost to the project, because these mounts are a bit more involved than the standard flat mounts, and cables sometimes have to be longer to allow for extending the TV outwards... but it does solve the problem of having to move the TV. In a recent basement installation, we installed a TV on a swing out mount so that the TV could be angled towards the pool table when a game broke out.
But for this most recent Chicago condo project, we wanted something a bit... cooler.
For one, the TV had to swing out almost a full 90 degrees to face the kitchen. And let's say you're having a party or hosting a sporting event, the last thing you want to do is get in front of the TV... so we made the TV motorized, and remote controlled!
At the touch of a button, the home owner can command the TV to swing out from the fireplace and face the kitchen so everyone can enjoy the view! And when the party is over, the TV swings back flat against the fireplace.
